AM RADIO STATIONS

Inspiration for this webpage:

In 1955 I got into a friendly competition with a school mate and it turned into a unique hobby.  We would listen to as many AM radio stations as we could from Allentown, Pennsylvania and get a written confirmation report from the station to prove that we heard the station.  We would send a post card (1 cent !) to the station, noting the date and time of the broadcast and what was playing on the station, and the station would return a "QSL CARD" or letter (3 cent stamp !) confirming the report. 

Next day, at school, we would compare notes.  In the two years of our pursuit, we each received written confirmation of almost 100 stations, so neither of us won the competition, but we both learned a lot and had lots of fun.

Local stations were easy to log,  because they were strong both day and night, but at night propagation caused distant signals to fade in and out and since radio stations in those days identified every half hour.  Sometimes we would have to listen for an hour or more with fading signals before we could make out the call letters.  With great patience and diligence, we were also able to pull out two stations on the same frequency, because they were many miles apart and propagation was always variable.
